Blogger and Wordpress are the most famous blogging platform. Both of these blogging platforms are SEO friendly, but question is that which platform is more SEO friendly? One of my Facebook friend said that Wordpress is more SEO friendly than Blogger, because there are so many SEO plugins for Wordpress which helps to index your content in search engines quickly. I was disagreed with his view, because as the product of Google, I am assure that the Blogger will never be back in anything.
Finally in 2012 Blogger has updated its interface with new features. This update had brought many new features in Blogger search preference settings to improve Blogger blogs SEO such as Meta Description Tags, Custom 404 Error Page, Custom Redirects, Custom Robots.txt and Custom Robots Header Tags.
There are 3 main option present in Blogger search preference settings to improve Blogger blog SEO, first one is Meta description Tags, second one is Custom Robots.txt and third one is Custom Robots Header Tags. In the first part of this article I am going to show you how configure Meta Description Tags, Custom Robots.txt and Custom Robots Header Tags options to improve your Blogger blog SEO.
1. Configure Meta Description Tag Option - Awesome SEO Improving Technique
What Is Meta Description Tag?
Meta description tag is something which is being used by search engines to describe a Web page. It provides a short summary about a Web page so that readers can decide whether the given page contains the information which they are looking for. A good meta description help you to gain more user click-through rates from search engine results page. So lets check out how to add meta description tag in Blogger.- Go to Blogger.com>>Dashboard>>Settings>>Search Preference
2. Configure Custom Robots.txt and Custom Robots Header Tags
Under Crawlers and Indexing section you can see two options to improve your Blogger blog SEO. First one is Custom robots.txt and the second one is Custom robots header tags. These two options are really helpful to improve your Blogger blog SEO. But configuring these options should be in proper way otherwise your blog may ignore by search engines.1. How To Enable Custom Robots.txt File In Blogger
- First of all, go to Blogger.com >> select you blog >> Settings >> Serach preferences >> Crawlers and Indexing. There you see two options;
- 1.Custom robots.txt.
- 2. Custom robots header tags (?).
- Now press edit button which is present after 'Custom robots.txt' option.
- After pressing on edit button you can see a message " Enable custom robots.txt content? " so press "Yes" and proceed to next step.
- Now you can see blank text area, where need to add a code which helps you to exclude a content from crawling.
- Copy following code and paste it into blank text area.

Disallow: /about
User-agent: *
Disallow: /contact
User-agent: *
Disallow: /services
- Example: Suppose you have to stop indexing this page-http://www.bloggingcrave.xyz/p/about_9.html. Copy remaining part of your blog address.
User-agent: *2. How To Enable Custom Header Tags In Blogger
Disallow: p/about_9.html.
- Log in to your Blogger account.
- Navigate to Blogger Dashboard > Settings > Search Preferences.
- Now click "Edit" link under the custom robots header tags option as shown in below image.
- If you clicked on "Edit" link, you can see set of options. Tick on them as shown in below image.
- Now click on Save changes!
1. Permalink: It allows you to create custom url for your article. Creating a custom url by using keywords which are related to post topic, help you to rank higher in search results. To change old posts permalink, first you need to revert the post to draft and under post settings, click on Permalink option. Now you can see two options i.e. Automatic Permalink (permalink which is generated by Blogger) and Custom Permalink.
To create custom url, click on Custom Permalink option and type the custom url by using keywords which are related to your post topic.
Remember break words using dash (-) character
2. Search Description: This is an impressive feature of Blogger post. It allows you create custom post meta description which helps you to improve keyword ranking in search engines. To create custom post meta description, go to post settings and click on Search Description option. Now can see blank box where you need to provide a description about your post by using keywords which are related to post topic.
Keep your description short as possible because Google crawls character around 160+ only.
3. Alt and Title Tags for images: It help you to index images in search engines. Search engines can easily index images by using Alt and Title tags. To set Alt and Title tags for images, first upload and add image in Post editor. After that click on the image and a small box appear above/below containing set of options. From that choose 'Properties', a popup box will then appear where you need to provide Alt and Title tags for the image.
